A seafaring town like Malpica de Bergantiños stands out for its devotion to the Virgin del Carmen. People of the sea, their families and, in general the entire town, hold one of the most famous festivals of the summer in Bergantiños: the Festivities of the Sea. This is a celebration that draws thousands of people that take advantage of the last days of the month of August to enjoy a Malpica that welcomes outsiders with open arms and that shares in its streets the joy, friendship, the encounter with those closest to us and an intense festive atmosphere by day and night. The Festivities of the Sea are highlighted due to the young people. It is an essential event in the festive schedule of young people, with music, nightlife and a lot of fun.

The maritime procession takes place on the Sunday of the festival. One of the boats of the fleet of Malpica is responsible for carrying the statue of the Virgen del Carmen on board, she is the patron saint of seafarers, and another boat carries the standard. After these all the town’s boats with hundreds of pilgrims follow the procession, in a festive tone, enjoying a boat tour that, if the weather permits, even reaches the vicinity of the Sisargas Islands.

The festivities end that night with a spectacular firework session. The colours in Area Maior are mixed with the light of the lighthouse of the Sisargas and the yearning to return to Malpica for the next Festivities of the Sea.
