The
town council of Malpica de Bergantinhos is situated in the north-east
of the province of Corunha, in the region of Bergantinhos. Bergantinhos
is in the mythical and famous Costa da Morte which is located
at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with which it borders on
its northern side and on which it has its coast from west to
east, from Monte Nariga ( Mount Nariga ) to the punta de Razo
( the most westerley sandy area of Baldaio, Carballo ).Half-way
along this coastal line, is the Cabo de San Adrian ( Cape of
St. Adrian ), and facing it are the Sisarga Islands ( Islas
Sisargas ). With a total area of 60.5 km2, and a population
density of 140 inhabs/km2, its main fishing port is that of
the capital, Malpica de Bergantinhos, mainley dedicated to coastal
and shell-fish fishing.
On
the eastern side it has its border with the area of Carballo,
and at the south with Ponteceso. The features of its landscape
are gentle and rounded, mainly due to the combination of water
and wind erosion, which lash these areas. Two of its main peaks
are Monte Neme ( 387m high) and Leutonho. The fact that it is
well communicated with cities like Santiago and Corunha, both
by land and sea, added to multiple attractions, allow Malpica
to be thought of, and be, a growing tourist destination. The
landscape and a fish and shell-fish rich gastronomy; the
pottery of Buņo, the historicacal-artistic heritage which
bears the trace left by Urbano Lugris; the last traces of the
mediaeval age - the yowers and the Romanesque church in Mens;
its eight sandy and peaceful beaches ( the only exception being
Area Maior in Malpica, which has been awarded the blue flag)...
are incentive enough to come and visit this part of the Atlantic.
